The EV Team Challenge

A Canadian summer road trip is a team effort, right? To that end, our journalists are going to have to work together for this year’s EcoRun, as teams of four will need to complete a drive loop within a time limit. The catch? They’ll also need to incorporate a mandatory charging stop.

Hybrid Versus Gas
Toyota Camry Hybrid & Toyota Camry TRD

To illustrate the differences between a pure-gas powertrain and an electrified one, journalists will pair off to drive the new 2025 Toyota Camry in a short drive loop alongside its predecessor. This short drive loop will illustrate just how much of an impact even partial electrification makes—but also provide an opportunity to speak to fuel-saving measures in ICE cars, which still represent the majority of vehicles on the road.

The One-Percent Challenge
Hyundai Kona Electric

How do you combat range anxiety? By figuring out just how far a vehicle can go on one percent state of charge (SoC). Journalists will get unlimited time to traverse a small drive loop, and will be scored on the distance travelled between two tick-downs of the remaining battery.

A selection of the most in-demand vehicles will be available for short road drives / content creation, should the journalists complete all of their scored activities.

Autocross/Slalom (Unscored Activity)

To illustrate the difference in different vehicle layouts (PHEV, EV sedan, EV SUV), journalists will have the opportunity to drive numerous vehicles through a slalom.
